Low immunity and frequent colds: causes, what to eat, and what helps
Why some people catch every cold going, the nutrient gaps that affect immune function (vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, iron, protein), what to eat and drink, which supplements have evidence, and when frequent infections need a doctor.

Short answer: most adults catch 2 to 4 colds a year. Catching more usually comes down to sleep, stress, exposure (kids, offices, travel) and nutrient gaps, especially vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, iron and protein. No food or supplement "boosts" immunity beyond normal, but correcting gaps lets it work normally.
Why do I catch colds so often?
- Short sleep: people sleeping under 6 hours were about four times as likely to catch a cold in one well-known study.
- Chronic stress.
- Exposure: young children at home, crowded offices, metro travel.
- Low vitamin D: very common in India and linked with more respiratory infections.
- Smoking and air pollution.
- Diabetes, anaemia and some medicines.
Nutrients the immune system needs
| Nutrient | Food sources |
|---|---|
| Vitamin D | Sun, eggs, fortified milk, supplements |
| Vitamin C | Amla, guava, citrus, capsicum |
| Zinc | Pumpkin seeds, chana, dairy, whole grains |
| Iron | Green leafy vegetables, dal, jaggery with vitamin C |
| Protein | Dal, paneer, curd, eggs, soya |
| Vitamin A | Carrots, pumpkin, green leafy vegetables |
| Selenium | Nuts, seeds, whole grains |
What to drink for low immunity and frequent colds
Warm fluids, haldi doodh, tulsi-adrak chai and kadha are comforting and help with a sore throat and congestion. Their direct effect on immunity is small or unproven, so enjoy them as habits, not cures.
Supplements for weak immunity: what research says
- Vitamin D: daily supplementation reduced respiratory infections modestly, mostly in people who were low.
- Vitamin C: regular intake slightly shortens colds; taking it after a cold starts does little.
- Zinc lozenges: may shorten a cold if started within 24 hours.
- Probiotics: some strains reduced the number of colds in trials; effects are modest.
- Amla, tulsi, turmeric, ginger: traditional use, small studies on immune markers.
When frequent infections need a doctor
Infections that need antibiotics many times a year, pneumonia more than once, infections that do not clear, unexplained weight loss or fever, or repeated thrush. These need tests.
