Amla as a vitamin C source in a dry powder

Why amla appears in Indian greens blends where ascorbic acid would be cheaper, what the tannin figure means, and what drying does to the vitamin C.

Amla, the Indian gooseberry, turns up in most Indian greens blends and in a growing number of foreign ones. Synthetic ascorbic acid is far cheaper and delivers a known amount of vitamin C, so the interesting question is why anyone pays for the fruit.

What amla actually contributes

Amla is one of the denser whole-food sources of vitamin C. It also carries a group of polyphenols, principally tannins, that ascorbic acid does not.

That is the trade. Ascorbic acid gives you a precise, cheap, single compound. Amla gives you a variable amount of the same vitamin plus the rest of the fruit's chemistry.

Why the tannin figure is printed instead

You will often see amla extract standardised to a tannin percentage, commonly 40%, rather than to vitamin C.

Two reasons. Tannins are stable and measurable, so a supplier can guarantee the figure batch to batch. Vitamin C content in a dried botanical varies with the fruit, the season and the drying method, so guaranteeing it is harder and more expensive.

So the printed number tells you the extract is concentrated and consistent. It is not a vitamin C claim, and reading it as one is the same error as treating any standardisation figure as a statement about outcomes.

What drying does

Vitamin C is fragile. It degrades with heat, light, oxygen and time, which is why fresh amla and amla powder are not the same proposition.

Processing method matters as a result. Low-temperature drying preserves more than high-heat drying, and an extract handled carefully retains more than one that was not. Most labels tell you none of this, which is worth knowing before treating a printed figure as what arrives in your glass.

Why it suits a greens blend

Two practical reasons beyond the vitamin. Amla is sour, which balances the grassy, slightly bitter profile of wheatgrass and barley grass. And the same tannins that make it standardisable are polyphenols, which is a category of compound a multivitamin does not carry at all.

What to check on a label

  • Is it amla extract or amla fruit powder? Extract is concentrated, powder is dried fruit.
  • Is a standardisation figure printed, and to what compound?
  • Is the amount stated, or folded into a blend total?
  • Does the brand claim a vitamin C figure? If so, ask whether it is tested in the finished blend or calculated from the raw material.

That last question separates a measured claim from an arithmetic one.
