Supplements with diabetes, PCOS, cholesterol or thyroid: what to know
What food supplements can and cannot do if you have diabetes, PCOS, high cholesterol, fatty liver or a thyroid condition. Where fibre fits, which ingredients interact with common medicines, what to avoid, and questions to ask your doctor.

Short answer: food supplements cannot treat or cure diabetes, PCOS, high cholesterol, fatty liver or thyroid disease, and in India none may claim to. Diet, activity, weight, sleep and prescribed medicine are the treatment. Where supplements fit is narrower: soluble fibre helps you reach daily fibre targets, which matters for blood sugar and cholesterol; correcting a tested vitamin D or B12 shortfall matters; and choosing products without added sugar or ingredients that interact with your medicines matters most. Talk to your doctor before adding anything.

Key takeaways
- No supplement replaces medicine for a diagnosed condition.
- Soluble fibre (psyllium, oats, guar) is the best-studied food tool for blood sugar and cholesterol.
- Long-term metformin lowers vitamin B12; ask your doctor about testing.
- Thyroid medicine must be taken apart from calcium, iron, magnesium and fibre.
- Check every label for sugar, maltodextrin, high-dose iodine and herbs that interact with your medicines.
Diabetes and prediabetes
- Fibre: soluble fibre slows how quickly carbohydrate is absorbed and is studied for post-meal blood sugar as part of the diet. Most Indian diets are short of fibre.
- B12: metformin can lower B12 over years; testing is worth asking about.
- Sweeteners: monk fruit and stevia carry almost no carbohydrate; maltodextrin and fruit powders do. Monk fruit sweetener explained.
- Herbs: some botanicals (for example tulsi, moringa, ashwagandha) have been studied for blood sugar and could add to the effect of insulin or sulfonylureas. Ask before combining.
PCOS
PCOS is managed with diet, activity, weight, sleep and medical care. Inositol has the most supplement research in PCOS; vitamin D matters if a test shows you are low. Fibre and protein at meals help with steadier energy and appetite. Be wary of products that promise to "fix hormones"; that is a claim no food supplement may make.
High cholesterol and fatty liver
Soluble fibre from oats, psyllium and guar is the most consistent food-based tool for LDL cholesterol. Weight loss and less refined carbohydrate and alcohol are the main levers for fatty liver. Turmeric and some herbal supplements have rare reports of liver injury, so people with liver disease should be especially careful. Turmeric: dose and liver cautions.
Thyroid conditions
- Take levothyroxine on an empty stomach and keep calcium, iron, magnesium and fibre supplements at least four hours away.
- Ashwagandha can raise thyroid hormone levels; ask before taking it. Ashwagandha: who should avoid it.
- High-dose iodine and kelp can upset thyroid function.
- Biotin in high doses can distort thyroid blood tests; stop it a few days before testing.
How to choose a daily supplement if you have one of these conditions
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Added sugar, maltodextrin, fruit powders | They add carbohydrate |
| Every ingredient and amount named | So your doctor can check interactions |
| No proprietary blends | A blend hides doses of herbs that may interact |
| Batch testing for heavy metals | Matters more if you take it daily for years |
| No disease claims | A product claiming to treat diabetes or thyroid is breaking the rules |
Where SWATVA fits, and where it does not
Daily Greens and Signal do not treat diabetes, PCOS, cholesterol, fatty liver or thyroid conditions, and we do not claim they do. What they offer someone managing one of these conditions is a daily base you can show your doctor line by line: every ingredient named in pack order, sweetened with monk fruit, every batch tested.
- Daily Greens: two soluble prebiotic fibres (PHGG and inulin), a spore probiotic, greens, and a premix with B12 and D. It also contains ashwagandha, tulsi and turmeric extracts, so check with your doctor if you are on thyroid, diabetes or blood-thinning medicine.
- Signal: a caffeine-free focus drink with an active B-complex, D3 and algal DHA.

Common questions
Can supplements cure diabetes?
No. No food supplement can cure or treat diabetes, and in India none may claim to. Diet, activity, weight and prescribed medicine are the treatment. Some fibres are studied for their effect on post-meal blood sugar as part of a diet.
Can I take a greens powder if I am diabetic?
Many people with diabetes can, but check the label for sugar, maltodextrin and fruit powders, and ask your doctor, especially if you take insulin or sulfonylureas, since some herbs may add to their effect.
Which supplements should I avoid with thyroid medicine?
Take calcium, iron, magnesium and fibre supplements at least four hours apart from levothyroxine. Ashwagandha and high-dose iodine can affect thyroid levels; ask your doctor first.
Do supplements help with PCOS?
Some, such as inositol and vitamin D where deficient, have been studied in PCOS. They are not treatments on their own. Weight, diet, activity and your doctor's plan come first.
Is monk fruit safe for diabetics?
Pure monk fruit extract has almost no carbohydrate and did not raise blood glucose in short studies. Many monk fruit products are bulked with erythritol or maltodextrin, so read the label.
