Short answer: vitamin D deficiency is common in India because most of us work indoors, cover up, live with air pollution and eat few fortified foods. Symptoms are vague: tiredness, aches, low mood. A blood test (25-hydroxy vitamin D) is the only way to know. Adults commonly take 600 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day with a meal that has some fat; a diagnosed deficiency needs a doctor's dose.
Why is vitamin D deficiency so common in India?
Skin makes vitamin D from strong midday UVB. Office hours, AC commutes, full-sleeve clothing, darker skin (which needs longer exposure), smog that filters UVB and almost no fortified milk mean many Indians make too little. Indian studies regularly find a majority of urban adults below the normal range.
Vitamin D deficiency symptoms
- Tiredness that sleep does not fix
- Bone, back or muscle aches
- Muscle weakness or cramps
- Low mood
- Hair fall in some people
- Frequent fractures in older adults
None of these is specific. Many people with low levels feel nothing at all.
Vitamin D normal range
| 25(OH)D level | Usual reading |
|---|---|
| Below 20 ng/mL | Deficient |
| 20 to 29 ng/mL | Insufficient |
| 30 to 100 ng/mL | Sufficient |
| Above 100 ng/mL | Too high, risk of toxicity |
Labs and guidelines differ slightly. Ask your doctor to read your result.
How much vitamin D3 per day?
ICMR-NIN sets the adult requirement at 600 IU (15 µg) a day. Many doctors suggest 1,000 to 2,000 IU for maintenance in people with little sun. The upper limit for adults is 4,000 IU a day unless a doctor prescribes more. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and builds up, so add up every product you take.
Vitamin D3 60,000 IU: weekly sachets and capsules
The 60K sachet is a prescription dose used to correct a deficiency, typically weekly for six to eight weeks, then monthly or a daily maintenance dose. Taking it for years without retesting is how people end up with too much. Retest after the course.
Best time to take vitamin D3
With your largest meal that contains some fat: breakfast with milk or eggs, or lunch with dal and ghee. Absorption roughly improves with fat. Morning or night does not matter much; taking it daily matters more.
Vitamin D3 vs D2
D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form skin makes and raises blood levels more effectively in most studies. D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from fungi. Vegetarian D3 from lichen exists if you avoid lanolin-derived D3.
Vitamin D3 with K2: do you need both?
K2 helps proteins that place calcium in bone. Pairing them is popular, and the evidence that the combination adds benefit is still building. If you take warfarin, do not start K2 without your doctor.
Vitamin D foods for vegetarians
Few foods carry much: sun-exposed mushrooms, fortified milk or oil where available, egg yolk, and paneer or cheese in small amounts. Food alone rarely fixes a deficiency, which is why sun and supplements matter.
Vitamin D side effects and too much vitamin D
At normal doses, side effects are rare. Too much over months raises blood calcium: nausea, thirst, frequent urination, confusion and kidney stones. People with kidney disease, sarcoidosis or high calcium should only take it under a doctor.
