Ginger Extract (Adrak): Gingerols, Nausea Evidence and Dose

Ginger's best evidence is for nausea, at about 1 g of ginger a day. What gingerols and shogaols are, how fresh, dried and extract compare, how much people take and who should check with a doctor.

Part of How to choose a greens powder in India. Related: Daily Greens, a daily nutrition supplement.

Short answer: ginger, adrak in Hindi and saunth when dried, is the root of Zingiber officinale. Its sharp taste comes from gingerols, which turn into shogaols when ginger is dried or heated. The strongest human evidence is for nausea, especially in pregnancy and after surgery, at around 1 g of ginger a day. Evidence for digestion and inflammation is smaller. As a food it is safe for nearly everyone; as a concentrated supplement a few groups should check with a doctor.

Key takeaways

  • Gingerols are the main active compounds in fresh ginger; drying and cooking turn some into shogaols, which are sharper.
  • Most nausea trials used 1 to 1.5 g of dried ginger a day, split into doses.
  • Evidence for gastric emptying and digestive comfort exists but is small.
  • High doses can cause heartburn. Ask a doctor first if you take blood thinners or have gallstones.

Fresh ginger, saunth and ginger extract

Form What it is Rough equivalence
Fresh adrak Raw root, mostly water About 4 to 6 g fresh equals 1 g dried
Saunth (dried ginger powder) Dried, ground root The form most trials used, at 1 g a day
Ginger extract Concentrated, often standardised to gingerols (for example 5%) Smaller doses; follow the label

A 2 to 3 cm piece of fresh ginger in tea gives roughly 5 g fresh, close to the 1 g of dried ginger used in trials. Ginger is one of the few supplement ingredients where ordinary kitchen amounts overlap with study doses.

What does ginger do? What the research shows

  • Nausea and vomiting. The most studied use. Reviews of trials in pregnancy found ginger reduced nausea compared with placebo, and it has been studied for nausea after surgery and with chemotherapy, with mixed results in the latter. Pregnancy nausea that stops you eating or drinking needs a doctor, not a supplement.
  • Digestion. Small studies found ginger speeds the rate the stomach empties after a meal, which may explain why people with occasional indigestion find it settling.
  • Muscle and joint discomfort. Some trials found modest reductions in muscle soreness after exercise and in joint discomfort. Effects were small.
  • Period pain. A few small trials compared ginger with common pain relievers and found similar effects, but the studies were small and short.

As a food supplement in India, ginger may not claim to treat or prevent any disease. The fair description is a well-tolerated root with good evidence for one thing, nausea, and modest evidence for a few others.

How much ginger can you take in a day?

Trials commonly used 1 to 1.5 g of dried ginger a day, sometimes up to 2 g, split into two to four doses. In food, a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger or half a teaspoon of saunth is a typical daily amount. Above 4 g of dried ginger a day, heartburn and stomach upset become more common.

Who should check with a doctor before taking ginger supplements?

  • People on blood thinners or antiplatelet medicine, because ginger may slightly affect clotting at high doses.
  • People with gallstones.
  • People on medicine for blood sugar or blood pressure, at supplement doses.
  • Anyone pregnant who wants to go beyond food amounts. Ginger in pregnancy is common and studied, but the dose should be agreed with a doctor.
  • Anyone with surgery planned.

What to check on a ginger supplement

  • Whether it is dried root powder or an extract, and for an extract, the gingerol figure.
  • The amount per serving, so you can compare it with the 1 g of dried ginger most studies used.
  • Named on its own line, not in a proprietary blend.
  • A batch test for microbes and heavy metals; dried roots pick up soil contaminants. What a certificate of analysis shows.

Ginger in a greens powder

In a blend, ginger does two jobs: it adds warmth to the taste, which helps mask the grassiness of wheatgrass and algae, and it brings its own gingerols. At blend amounts it is a supporting ingredient. If you want the doses used in nausea studies, a dedicated ginger product or kitchen ginger is the more direct route.

Ginger: what people search, answered

Ginger benefits for digestion, gas and acidity

Small studies found ginger speeds how quickly the stomach empties after a meal, which may explain why it feels settling for heaviness and gas. Its strongest evidence is for nausea. For acidity, results are mixed: small amounts may help some people, while large amounts can cause heartburn.

Ginger for cold, weight loss and periods

  • Cold and cough: adrak chai is soothing; there is little evidence it shortens a cold.
  • Weight loss: small studies show minor effects at best.
  • Period pain: a few small trials found effects similar to common pain relievers.

Ginger side effects and who should be careful

Heartburn and stomach upset at higher doses. People on blood thinners, with gallstones, or on diabetes or blood pressure medicine should ask a doctor before taking concentrated ginger supplements.

How much ginger per day, and on an empty stomach?

Studies used about 1 to 1.5 g of dried ginger a day, roughly 4 to 6 g fresh. On an empty stomach ginger can cause heartburn for some people; after food is gentler.

Ginger powder (saunth) vs ginger tablets vs ginger tea

Saunth is the form most trials used. Tablets give a measured dose; tea is pleasant but variable. Kitchen amounts overlap with study doses more for ginger than for most ingredients.

Common questions

How much ginger should I take a day?

Most nausea trials used 1 to 1.5 g of dried ginger (saunth) a day, split into doses. That is roughly 4 to 6 g of fresh ginger. Above about 4 g of dried ginger, heartburn becomes more common.

Is ginger good for digestion?

Small studies found ginger speeds how quickly the stomach empties after a meal, which may explain why it feels settling. The strongest evidence is for nausea, not general digestion.

Who should avoid ginger supplements?

Ask a doctor first if you take blood thinners, have gallstones, take blood-sugar or blood-pressure medicine, are pregnant and want more than food amounts, or have surgery planned.

Is ginger good for gas and bloating?

Ginger may help the stomach empty faster after meals, which can ease heaviness. Evidence for gas specifically is limited but it is low-risk in food amounts.

Can ginger cause acidity?

In larger amounts, yes. Small amounts after food are usually fine.

Can I drink ginger water every day?

Yes, in food amounts for most people. Ask a doctor if you take blood thinners or have gallstones.

Adrak kab khana chahiye?

Khane ke baad ya chai mein lena sabse aasaan aur pet ke liye halka hai.
