Proprietary Blend on a Supplement Label: What It Hides
A proprietary blend lists several ingredients under one combined weight. What that format conceals, why brands use it, and how to spot one.

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients printed on a label under one combined weight. You see the names. You see a total, say 2,400 mg. You do not see how much of each one is in there.
That gap is the entire point of the format.
What a proprietary blend tells you, and what it hides
Take a focus blend listing five ingredients under "Proprietary Focus Matrix, 1,500 mg". One of those ingredients might cost 40 rupees a kilo. Another might cost 12,000. Nothing on the label stops a brand putting 1,480 mg of the cheap one and 5 mg each of the rest, then naming all five on the front of the pack.
The blend is real. The ingredients are real. The label is legal. And it still tells you almost nothing about what you are swallowing.
Ingredient order on an Indian supplement label
India's packaging rules require ingredients to appear in descending order of weight. So the first name in a blend is present in a larger amount than the second, and so on down the list.
That is genuinely useful, and it is also where most people stop reading. Descending order gives you a ranking, not a scale. First place could be 90% of the blend or 22% of it. Both look identical on the pack.
The tell worth knowing
If a brand puts its most expensive, most marketable ingredient last in a long blend, that ingredient is the smallest thing in the mix by weight. It is on the label to be read, not to do a job.
Why supplement brands use proprietary blends
Two reasons get given, and only one of them is honest.
Protecting a formula
A brand argues that publishing exact amounts lets competitors copy the formula. This is a real concern in a category where formulas are easy to reverse engineer, and it is the reason the format exists at all.
Protecting a margin
Hiding the split lets a brand load a blend with whatever is cheap that quarter, keep the name of the expensive ingredient on the front, and change the ratio between batches without changing a word on the pack. Nobody can tell, because there was never a number to compare against.
Both are reasons to use a proprietary blend. Only one of them is about protecting a formula.
How to spot a proprietary blend on a label
The word "proprietary" is the obvious flag, but it is not the only one. Look for:
- Several ingredient names sharing a single weight
- The words blend, matrix, complex or formula followed by one number
- A long ingredient list with a short nutrition panel
- A front-of-pack hero ingredient that appears near the end of the list
None of these mean a product is bad. Plenty of decent products use blends. They mean you cannot verify what you are buying, and you should price that uncertainty into the decision.
What a fully disclosed supplement label looks like
The opposite of a proprietary blend is dull to read and easy to check. Every ingredient carries its own weight. Every extract carries the figure it is standardised to, so 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract at 5% withanolides tells you both how much material is there and how concentrated it is.
You can then do something you cannot do with a blend. You can take the amount on the pack, find the amount used in published research on that ingredient, and see whether they are in the same range. Sometimes they are. Often they are not, and the label was the only place that would have told you.
This is more work for the brand. It requires holding a formula steady across batches, buying to a specification rather than to a price, and accepting that anyone can compare your numbers to a competitor's. That is the trade.
