Digestive Enzyme Supplements: What They Do, How to Read Units
Digestive enzymes like amylase, protease, lipase and lactase break down food. Why enzyme labels should show activity units (DU, HUT, FIP, ALU) not milligrams, what the evidence covers and who benefits.

Short answer: digestive enzyme supplements contain enzymes such as amylase (for starch), protease (for protein), lipase (for fat) and lactase (for milk sugar), usually made by fermentation from fungi or bacteria, or taken from plants such as papaya and pineapple. The clearest evidence is for lactase in people with lactose intolerance, and for prescription pancreatic enzymes in people whose pancreas does not make enough. For general digestive comfort in healthy people, evidence is limited. The most important label check is that each enzyme is listed with an activity unit, not just a weight.

Key takeaways
- An enzyme's weight says little. What it can do is measured in activity units, which differ by enzyme.
- Lactase has good evidence for reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance when taken with dairy.
- Prescription pancreatic enzymes treat a medical condition; over-the-counter blends are not a substitute.
- For everyday bloating in healthy people, trials are few and small.
- Enzymes need to be taken with food to do anything.
Which enzymes do what?
| Enzyme | Breaks down | Activity unit on labels |
|---|---|---|
| Amylase | Starch | DU (dextrinizing units) or SKB |
| Protease | Protein | HUT (haemoglobin units) or PC |
| Lipase | Fat | FIP or LU |
| Lactase | Lactose (milk sugar) | ALU or FCC LacU |
| Cellulase | Plant fibre (cellulose) | CU |
| Alpha-galactosidase | Sugars in beans and lentils that cause gas | GalU |
| Bromelain, papain | Protein (from pineapple and papaya) | GDU, FCC PU |
Why milligrams are the wrong number
Two enzyme powders of the same weight can differ many-fold in activity, depending on the source and how concentrated the preparation is. Activity units are measured by standard tests, many defined in the Food Chemicals Codex, and tell you how much work the enzyme can do. A label that lists "digestive enzyme blend 50 mg" with no units cannot be compared with anything. This is the same problem as a proprietary blend: the weight is there, the meaningful number is not.
What does the evidence show?
- Lactase: reduces bloating and discomfort from dairy in people with lactose intolerance, taken with the first bite. Common in India, where many adults digest lactose poorly.
- Alpha-galactosidase: small trials found less gas after bean-heavy meals. Relevant to a dal and rajma diet.
- Pancreatic enzymes: prescription treatment for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, for example after pancreatitis or with cystic fibrosis. Not a self-care product.
- General enzyme blends: a few small trials in people with functional indigestion found some symptom improvement; many studies were small and industry-funded.
As food supplements in India, enzyme products may not claim to treat or prevent any disease.
Are enzymes destroyed by stomach acid?
Partly. Many plant and animal enzymes lose activity in strong acid. Fungal enzymes from Aspergillus tend to work across a wider pH range, which is one reason they dominate supplements. Taking enzymes at the start of a meal, when food buffers stomach acid, gives them the best chance.
Who should check with a doctor first?
- Anyone with ongoing indigestion, pain, weight loss, oily stools or difficulty swallowing. These need a diagnosis.
- People on blood thinners, for bromelain and papain.
- People with allergies to pineapple, papaya or moulds, depending on the enzyme source.
- People with ulcers or gastritis, as protease can irritate.
What to check on an enzyme supplement
- Each enzyme named, with an activity unit per serving.
- The source (fungal, bacterial, plant or animal), if you are vegetarian.
- Whether the product is meant to be taken with meals.
Where SWATVA stands
Daily Greens includes a digestive enzyme blend, listed in the ingredient ledger. In a once-a-day drink it supports the fibre and probiotic in the formula; it is not a replacement for lactase with dairy or for prescribed enzymes. The ledger should show each enzyme and its activity unit; if you want the full enzyme breakdown before then, ask us.
The first run is 55 pouches. Pre-ordering takes four minutes and nothing is charged.

Digestive enzymes: what people search, answered
What digestive enzymes do
Your pancreas and gut already make enzymes: amylase for starch, protease for protein, lipase for fat, lactase for milk sugar. Supplement enzymes, usually from fungal or plant sources like papain (papaya) and bromelain (pineapple), add to that supply in the stomach and small intestine.
Digestive enzymes for bloating and gas
This is the most common search. Lactase has good evidence for people who are lactose intolerant and eat dairy. For general bloating, trials of broad enzyme blends are small and mixed. If bloating comes with weight loss, blood in stool, or pain at night, see a doctor rather than trying supplements.
Digestive enzymes vs probiotics
Enzymes break food down now. Probiotics are live bacteria that live in the gut for a while. Fibres like PHGG and inulin feed the bacteria already there. They do different jobs, which is why gut blends often combine them.
Digestive enzyme side effects
Usually mild: nausea, a loose stomach or cramps. Avoid bromelain or papain if you are allergic to pineapple or papaya, and ask your doctor if you take blood thinners, because bromelain may add to their effect.
When to take digestive enzymes: before or after meals
With the first bites of a meal. Enzymes need food to work on, so taking them hours away from eating does little.
Digestive enzyme supplement price in India
Single-enzyme tablets such as lactase or papain cost little. Broad-spectrum capsules cost more. Check that the label lists activity units (like FCC or HUT), not just milligrams.

Common questions
What do digestive enzymes do?
They break food into smaller parts: amylase for starch, protease for protein, lipase for fat, lactase for milk sugar. Supplements add enzymes to what your body already makes.
Do digestive enzyme supplements work?
Lactase has good evidence for lactose intolerance, and prescription pancreatic enzymes treat a medical condition. For general bloating in healthy people, trials are few and small.
Why do enzyme labels use units like HUT and DU?
Because weight says little about what an enzyme can do. Activity units measure its strength by standard tests; two powders of the same weight can differ many-fold.
Do digestive enzymes help with bloating?
Lactase helps people who are lactose intolerant. For general bloating the evidence for enzyme blends is small and mixed, and a doctor should check bloating that will not go away.
Should I take digestive enzymes before or after food?
With the first bites of a meal. They need food to act on.
Can I take digestive enzymes with probiotics?
Yes. They do different jobs and are often combined.
Which SWATVA product has digestive enzymes?
Daily Greens, alongside PHGG, inulin and the spore probiotic B. coagulans MTCC 5856.
