Short answer: a good probiotic names its strain (for example Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856), guarantees its CFU count until the expiry date, and survives the way you will actually store it. In India that last point matters: many capsule probiotics need refrigeration and lose count in summer heat, while spore-forming probiotics keep at room temperature. Curd is a healthy source of live bacteria but not a measured dose. Pairing a probiotic with prebiotic fibre, which feeds gut bacteria, is the most practical daily routine.

Key takeaways
- Effects are strain-specific. "Lactobacillus" on a label tells you the genus, not what was studied.
- CFU (colony-forming units) should be guaranteed at expiry, not at manufacture.
- Spore probiotics such as Bacillus coagulans survive heat, shelf life and stomach acid better than most.
- Prebiotic fibre plus probiotic (a synbiotic) is a stronger daily habit than either alone.
- Probiotics are not for everyone; people who are very ill or immunocompromised should ask a doctor.
Curd vs probiotic capsules vs probiotic powder
| Home curd | Capsules | Powder in a daily drink | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strain named | No | Usually | Should be |
| Count known | No | Yes | Yes |
| Survives Indian summer | Fresh only | Many need a fridge | Spore forms do |
| Comes with fibre | No | Rarely | Can, if the blend includes prebiotics |
| Habit | Easy if you eat it daily | Another pill | Part of a morning glass |
How to read a probiotic label
- Genus, species and strain code. Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 is fully identified; MTCC is India's Microbial Type Culture Collection.
- CFU per serving at expiry. Studies on B. coagulans used about 1 to 2 billion CFU a day.
- Storage. "Refrigerate after opening" is a problem if you will not.
- No hidden blends. A "probiotic blend 500 mg" with no strain list cannot be checked. What a proprietary blend hides.
Which probiotics survive Indian heat?
Lactic acid bacteria (most Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) die off with heat and moisture, which is why many capsules ask for refrigeration. Spore-forming bacteria, chiefly Bacillus coagulans and some Bacillus subtilis strains, sit dormant in a tough coat until they reach the gut. For a product stored in an Indian kitchen through May and June, a spore former is the practical choice. Bacillus coagulans: the spore probiotic explained.
Prebiotic vs probiotic: why you want both
Probiotics are the bacteria; prebiotics are their food. Without enough fibre, added bacteria have little to live on. PHGG and inulin are two well-studied prebiotic fibres, and they feed different groups of bacteria. PHGG vs inulin.
Probiotics after antibiotics, for gas and bloating, and for travel
- After antibiotics: taking a probiotic during and after a course, a few hours apart from the antibiotic dose, is common practice; evidence is strongest for reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea with specific strains.
- Gas and bloating: results vary by strain and person. Fix fibre, water and eating speed alongside. Gas, bloating and constipation: what helps.
- Travel: a room-temperature probiotic is easier to keep up on the road.
The easiest way to take a probiotic every day
The best probiotic is the one you actually take. A capsule is one more thing to remember; a morning drink that already carries fibre and bacteria becomes routine.

Common questions
Which probiotic is best in India?
The one with a named strain code, a CFU count guaranteed until expiry, and storage that matches how you will keep it. In Indian heat, spore-forming probiotics such as Bacillus coagulans keep without a fridge.
Is curd a probiotic?
Curd contains live bacteria, which is good for you, but home curd is not standardised: the strains and counts vary. It is a healthy food rather than a measured probiotic.
What is the difference between prebiotic and probiotic?
Probiotics are live bacteria. Prebiotics, such as PHGG and inulin, are fibres that feed the bacteria already in your gut. Taking both together is called a synbiotic.
When is the best time to take a probiotic?
Consistency matters more than the hour. Many people take it with breakfast. If you are on antibiotics, take the probiotic a few hours apart from the dose.
Who should not take probiotics?
People who are immunocompromised, critically ill, have a central line or have had recent major surgery should ask a doctor first.
