IBS diet in India: foods for IBS bloating and constipation, fibre and supplements

What irritable bowel syndrome is, an Indian diet approach for IBS bloating and IBS constipation, the low-FODMAP idea, which fibres suit IBS and which can worsen it, Ayurvedic herbs and supplements, and warning signs that need a doctor.

Part of Fibre supplements in India, compared. Related: Daily Greens, a daily nutrition supplement.

Short answer: IBS is a diagnosis from a doctor, not something to self-label. Its management is diet changes, stress management and sometimes medicine. For many people the biggest food lever is FODMAPs, a group of fermentable carbs found in onion, garlic, wheat, rajma, chana, some fruits and milk. Soluble fibres like PHGG and psyllium are usually better tolerated than inulin. No supplement treats IBS.

What is irritable bowel syndrome?

A long-term gut condition with abdominal pain linked to bowel habits, plus bloating, constipation (IBS-C), diarrhoea (IBS-D) or both (IBS-M). Tests look normal; the gut is more sensitive and its movement is irregular. Stress makes it worse.

Warning signs: see a doctor first

Blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, symptoms starting after 50, waking at night with diarrhoea, fever, or a family history of bowel cancer or coeliac disease. These are not IBS until a doctor has checked.

IBS diet chart India: foods that are usually easier

Usually easier (low FODMAP) Common triggers (high FODMAP)
Rice, poha, oats, millets like jowar and ragi Wheat in large amounts, maida
Moong dal (well cooked), small portions of masoor Rajma, chole, whole urad, large dal portions
Lactose-free milk, curd, paneer, hard cheese Milk, kheer, ice cream (if lactose sensitive)
Lauki, tori, carrot, spinach, tomato, capsicum Onion, garlic, cauliflower, mushroom
Banana (firm), papaya, orange, grapes, kiwi Apple, mango, watermelon, pear
Hing, jeera, ginger, saunf for flavour Honey, sugar-free sweets with sorbitol

A low-FODMAP diet is meant to be done for 2 to 6 weeks and then foods reintroduced one by one, ideally with a dietitian. It is not a forever diet.

IBS bloating: what to eat

Smaller, regular meals; eat slowly; cut carbonated drinks and chewing gum; limit onion, garlic and rajma; try peppermint oil capsules (evidence for IBS pain) after asking your doctor.

IBS constipation: what to eat

Increase soluble fibre gradually, drink enough water, move daily, and use kiwi (two a day has trials for constipation). Psyllium (isabgol) and PHGG are the best-studied fibres for IBS.

Fibre for IBS: which kind?

  • Psyllium (isabgol): recommended in IBS guidelines.
  • PHGG: low-fermenting, studied in IBS with good tolerance.
  • Inulin and FOS: high-FODMAP and can worsen bloating in IBS.
  • Wheat bran: often worsens IBS symptoms.

Can I take supplements with IBS? Probiotics, greens powders, herbs

Some probiotic strains help IBS symptoms in trials, but results vary by strain; try one for 4 weeks and stop if nothing changes. Greens powders often contain inulin, onion-family or apple ingredients that can trigger IBS; read the label. Ayurvedic herbs used for IBS include ginger, saunf, jeera and bael; evidence is limited. Ask your gastroenterologist before starting anything.

About Daily Greens and IBS, honestly

Daily Greens was built for everyday gut support, not for IBS. It contains PHGG, the best-tolerated fibre above, but also chicory inulin, which some people with IBS do not tolerate. If you have IBS, show your doctor the full ingredient list, and if you try it, start with a quarter scoop. We would rather tell you that than sell you a pouch that does not suit you. Every ingredient is named so you can check.

What you get

Daily Greens names every ingredient, so you and your doctor can check it.

It has PHGG, the gentler fibre, and also inulin, which some people with IBS do not tolerate. If your doctor agrees, start with a quarter scoop.
