Moringa 10:1 extract: what the ratio actually means

An extract ratio is not a potency figure. What 10:1 describes, why it is weaker evidence than a standardisation percentage, and how brands use the gap.

Moringa appears on labels two ways: as dried leaf powder, and as an extract with a ratio like 10:1. The ratio looks like a strength figure. It is not, quite, and the difference is worth understanding because ratios are used across the category.

What 10:1 describes

Ten kilos of raw plant material went in, one kilo of extract came out. It is a statement about concentration by weight, nothing more.

So 300 mg of a 10:1 extract is derived from roughly 3 g of leaf. That is genuinely more plant material than 300 mg of dried leaf, and it is why extracts cost more.

Why a ratio is weaker than a percentage

A ratio tells you how much material was reduced. It does not tell you what survived.

Extraction is selective. Depending on the solvent, the temperature and the method, some compounds concentrate and others are lost entirely. Two 10:1 moringa extracts made differently can contain quite different things while carrying the same number on the pack.

A standardisation percentage answers the question a ratio cannot: how much of a named compound is in this material, verified by testing. Where a percentage is available, it is the stronger figure.

When a ratio is the honest option

Not every plant has a compound worth standardising to. For some botanicals there is no agreed marker, or the research has not settled on one. In those cases a ratio is what a supplier can truthfully guarantee, and printing it is better than printing nothing.

The problem is not ratios. It is ratios presented as if they were potency, or used where a percentage exists and was simply not paid for.

The 10:1 that is not 10:1

Two things to watch.

First, a ratio can be calculated from fresh weight rather than dried weight. Fresh leaf is largely water, so a ratio measured that way flatters itself considerably. Reputable suppliers state which basis they used and most labels do not pass it on.

Second, an extract can be re-diluted with carrier after extraction and still be described by its original ratio. This is why the amount matters alongside the ratio, and why a blend total that hides the amount hides both.

Moringa specifically

Moringa leaf is used partly for its mineral content, particularly iron and calcium, and partly as a general plant base. Because minerals do not degrade the way vitamins do, concentration by extraction behaves fairly predictably for them.

That makes moringa one of the ingredients where a 10:1 extract has a clear rationale: you are getting more of the same material per gram of scoop, in a formula where scoop space is the constraint.

What to check

  • Is it extract or leaf powder? The word matters.
  • If there is a ratio, is the amount also given?
  • Is the ratio on a fresh or dried basis? Ask if it does not say.
  • Is there a standardisation percentage available instead, and if not, why not?
