Pomegranate Extract: Punicalagins, Urolithin A, What to Check

Pomegranate (anar) extract is valued for punicalagins and ellagic acid, polyphenols mostly from the peel. How gut bacteria turn them into urolithins, what human research covers, and what a standardisation figure tells you.

Short answer: pomegranate extract, from anar (Punica granatum), is used for its polyphenols, mainly punicalagins and ellagic acid, which are concentrated in the peel and the white membrane rather than the seeds. Very little punicalagin is absorbed intact. Gut bacteria convert it into urolithins, and how much urolithin a person makes varies widely between people. Human trials, mostly small, have looked at blood pressure, blood lipids, exercise recovery and markers of oxidative stress, with modest and mixed results.

Key takeaways

  • Punicalagins are the large polyphenols that give pomegranate its astringency. Most sit in the peel.
  • Extracts are standardised to punicalagins or to ellagic acid, often 40%. Check which one.
  • Gut bacteria turn ellagitannins into urolithins. Some people make plenty, some very little.
  • Juice and extract research is modest. Pomegranate is a polyphenol source, not a treatment.
  • Pomegranate juice may interact with some medicines; check with a doctor if you take warfarin or blood pressure medicine.

What is in pomegranate extract?

Compound Where it is What it does in the body
Punicalagins Peel and membrane, some in juice Broken down in the gut to ellagic acid
Ellagic acid Peel, and released from punicalagins Converted by gut bacteria to urolithins
Anthocyanins Arils (the red seeds) and juice The red pigment; a separate polyphenol group
Punicic acid Seed oil A fatty acid, mostly absent from peel extracts

A peel-based extract and pomegranate juice are different products. Juice carries sugar and anthocyanins; peel extract carries far more punicalagin per gram and almost no sugar.

What are urolithins, and why does everyone ask about urolithin A?

When you eat ellagitannins, from pomegranate, walnuts or berries, gut bacteria break them down into compounds called urolithins, which are absorbed far better than the parent polyphenols. Urolithin A has drawn attention from studies on muscle and the cell's energy machinery. The catch is that people fall into different "metabotypes": in studies, a sizeable share of people produced little or no urolithin A from the same pomegranate dose. So the same extract can do different things in different people. Taking pre-made urolithin A is a separate product from taking pomegranate.

What does the research on pomegranate show?

  • Blood pressure: reviews of juice trials found small reductions in systolic pressure, with inconsistent results across studies.
  • Blood lipids and oxidative stress markers: small trials with mixed results.
  • Exercise recovery: a few trials found less muscle soreness or strength loss after hard exercise; others did not.

Most studies are small, short and use juice, so they do not transfer neatly to a peel extract at a different dose. As a food supplement in India, pomegranate extract may not claim to treat or prevent disease.

How much pomegranate extract do people take?

Extract trials commonly used 250 mg to 1 g a day of a standardised extract. Juice trials used 150 to 250 ml a day. If a label gives only "pomegranate extract 200 mg", look for the standardisation figure to know what the 200 mg contains.

Who should check with a doctor first?

  • People on warfarin; there are case reports of pomegranate juice affecting its levels.
  • People on blood pressure medicine, since effects could add up.
  • People on medicines processed by liver enzymes that interact with grapefruit; the evidence for pomegranate is weaker, but worth asking.
  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, for concentrated extracts.

What to check on a pomegranate extract

  • Standardisation and to what: "40% ellagic acid" and "30% punicalagins" describe different things. Some low-cost extracts are boosted with cheap free ellagic acid, so a punicalagin figure is the more informative one.
  • Source part: peel, whole fruit or juice.
  • Named on its own line, with a batch test. What a standardisation figure does and does not promise.

Where SWATVA stands

Pomegranate extract is in both Daily Greens and Signal, by design, and named on its own line in the ingredient ledger. In Daily Greens it adds polyphenol depth and flavour; we make no claim for it on its own. If you take both blends, you are taking it twice, at blend amounts, not at the doses used in extract trials.

The first run is 55 pouches. Pre-ordering takes four minutes and nothing is charged.

Pomegranate: what people search, answered

Pomegranate benefits for skin, heart and blood pressure

Pomegranate is rich in polyphenols called punicalagins. Reviews of juice trials found small reductions in systolic blood pressure, and small studies have looked at skin and exercise recovery. Results vary between studies and between people, partly because gut bacteria convert pomegranate polyphenols differently in each person.

Pomegranate juice vs extract vs fruit

The fruit gives fibre and anthocyanins; juice gives the polyphenols but also sugar; a peel-based extract gives far more punicalagins per gram with almost no sugar. If sugar matters to you, an extract or the whole fruit beats juice.

Pomegranate side effects and interactions

Generally safe as food. Pomegranate juice has case reports of affecting warfarin levels, and may add to blood pressure medicine; ask a doctor if you take either.

How much pomegranate extract per day?

Extract trials used about 250 mg to 1 g a day of a standardised extract; juice trials used 150 to 250 ml a day.

Anar ke fayde (Hindi)

Anar mein punicalagins naam ke polyphenols hote hain. Juice ke trials mein blood pressure mein thodi kami dekhi gayi. Juice mein shakkar bhi hoti hai, isliye poora phal ya extract behtar hai.

Common questions

What is the difference between pomegranate juice and extract?

Juice carries sugar and anthocyanins from the seeds. A peel-based extract carries far more punicalagins per gram and almost no sugar. They are different products.

Does pomegranate give you urolithin A?

Gut bacteria turn pomegranate's ellagitannins into urolithins, but people differ widely. In studies a sizeable share of people made little or no urolithin A from the same dose.

Who should be careful with pomegranate?

People on warfarin or blood pressure medicine should ask a doctor, as should anyone pregnant or breastfeeding before using concentrated extracts.

Is pomegranate good for blood pressure?

Reviews of juice trials found small reductions in systolic pressure. It is not a treatment; keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your doctor before adding concentrated extracts.

Is pomegranate juice or the fruit better?

The whole fruit gives fibre with less sugar. Juice concentrates the polyphenols but also the sugar.

Can I eat pomegranate every day?

Yes, as a fruit it is fine daily for most people. Ask a doctor if you take warfarin.
