Tart Cherry Extract: Sleep, Recovery and Study Doses

Tart (Montmorency) cherry is studied for sleep and exercise recovery. Its melatonin content is tiny; its anthocyanins are the main interest. What trials found, the doses used, and how extracts compare with juice.

Part of Ingredient evidence, graded. Related: Signal, a focus and clarity supplement.

Short answer: tart cherry, usually the Montmorency variety of Prunus cerasus, is a sour cherry rich in anthocyanins and other polyphenols. It is studied mainly for sleep and for recovery after hard exercise. Small trials found modest improvements in sleep time and in muscle soreness, using concentrated juice equal to roughly 60 to 100 cherries a day. Tart cherry does contain melatonin, but in amounts far below a melatonin tablet, so its effect on sleep, if any, is unlikely to come from melatonin alone.

Key takeaways

  • Tart cherry is a different fruit from the sweet cherries sold fresh in Indian markets.
  • Its main compounds of interest are anthocyanins, the red-purple pigments.
  • Sleep trials are few and small; the best known used juice concentrate twice a day.
  • Exercise recovery trials more often found less soreness and faster return of strength, though not all agree.
  • Juice carries a lot of sugar; extracts and powders carry the polyphenols without most of it.

How much melatonin is in tart cherry?

Measured amounts vary, but a typical serving of tart cherry juice concentrate carries well under a tenth of a milligram of melatonin, and often far less. A low-dose melatonin tablet carries 0.5 to 3 mg. So tart cherry is not a natural melatonin pill. Researchers have suggested its anthocyanins, or its small amount of tryptophan, might play a part, but the mechanism is not settled.

What does the research on tart cherry show?

Area What trials used Result, briefly
Sleep About 30 ml of juice concentrate, twice a day, 1 to 2 weeks Small increases in sleep time and efficiency in small trials
Exercise recovery Juice or capsules for a few days around hard exercise Less soreness and quicker strength recovery in several trials
Joint comfort and uric acid Juice or extract over weeks Small studies; mixed and preliminary

Most trials had a few dozen participants, and several were funded by cherry industry groups. The fair reading is that tart cherry may help a little with recovery and perhaps sleep, with more evidence needed. As a food supplement in India, tart cherry may not claim to treat or prevent any condition.

How much tart cherry do people take?

  • Juice concentrate: about 30 ml twice a day in most trials.
  • Powder or capsules: commonly 480 mg to 1 g of powdered extract a day.
  • Whole juice: about 240 ml twice a day in some exercise studies, which brings a lot of sugar.

Who should check with a doctor first?

  • People with diabetes, for juice and concentrate, because of the sugar.
  • People on blood thinners, for high-dose extracts.
  • People with gout or kidney stones considering it alongside medicine; ask before changing anything.

What to check on a tart cherry product

  • The variety (Montmorency is the most studied) and whether it is juice, powder or extract.
  • An anthocyanin or polyphenol figure, if the product is an extract.
  • Added sugar, if it is a juice or gummy.
  • Named on its own line, not inside a proprietary blend.

Where SWATVA stands

Signal includes tart cherry extract, named on its own line in the ingredient ledger, as one of its fruit polyphenol sources alongside blueberry and pomegranate. It is not a sleep product, and we do not claim tart cherry in Signal changes sleep or recovery. Research on the ingredient does not establish an outcome for the finished blend. Tart cherry: what people search, answered

Tart cherry benefits

Tart (Montmorency) cherries are rich in anthocyanins, polyphenol pigments, and contain small amounts of melatonin. Research has focused on muscle soreness after hard exercise and on sleep, mostly using tart cherry juice concentrate.

Tart cherry for sleep

The most searched use. Small trials using juice twice a day reported modest improvements in sleep time in some groups. The melatonin dose in cherries is far below a melatonin tablet, so any effect is gentle, not sedating.

Tart cherry for uric acid and gout

Observational studies link cherry intake with fewer gout flares, and small trials show lower uric acid. It is not a substitute for gout medicine; talk to your doctor if you have gout.

Tart cherry juice vs extract vs powder

Juice concentrate carries sugar. Powdered extracts give the polyphenols without the sugar load and travel better. Check the label for anthocyanin content rather than just "cherry".

Tart cherry side effects

Generally well tolerated. Juice can upset the stomach or add calories. Ask your doctor if you take blood thinners.

Tart cherry in India: price and where to buy

Tart cherries do not grow commercially in India, so products are imported and costly. Extract inside a blend is the cheaper way to get it daily.

Tart cherry ke fayde (Hindi)

Tart cherry mein anthocyanins aur thoda melatonin hota hai. Research neend aur exercise ke baad muscle dard par hui hai. Gout ho to dawa ki jagah nahi, doctor se baat karein.
