Broken-cell chlorella: why the cell wall matters
Chlorella has a tough cellulose wall that human digestion does not break down. What cracking it does, how it is done, and how to tell from a label.

Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater algae, and it comes wrapped in a cellulose wall that is unusually tough. Humans do not produce the enzyme that breaks down cellulose. That one fact drives everything else about how this ingredient is sold.
What the cell wall does
The wall protects the cell. It also means that if the wall stays intact through processing, a good share of what is inside passes through you unopened.
So chlorella is processed to crack it. The words used on labels are broken-cell, cracked-cell or pulverised, and they refer to the same idea: the wall has been mechanically disrupted so the contents are accessible.
How the wall gets broken
Two methods dominate. Bead milling passes the algae through a chamber of small beads that grind the walls apart. Pressure differential methods push cells through a sudden drop in pressure so they rupture.
Both are extra steps with extra equipment, which is why broken-cell chlorella costs more than the plain kind. It is the same relationship as juice powder versus leaf powder: more processing, more input per kilo out, higher price.
How to tell from a label
The label either says broken-cell or it does not. That is genuinely the whole test.
A brand paying for the cracked version says so, because it is a cost they want credited. A label reading only "chlorella" or "chlorella powder" is almost always the cheaper intact form, on the same logic that applies across the category: nobody buys the more expensive input and then hides it.
Sourcing matters more here than elsewhere
Algae grow in water and absorb what is in it. That makes chlorella and spirulina the two ingredients in a greens blend where heavy metal testing is least optional.
If you only ask a brand about one ingredient's batch report, ask about the algae. Growing conditions vary enormously between producers, and the finished powder concentrates whatever was in the water.
Chlorella and spirulina are not interchangeable
They appear together on labels and get treated as one thing. They are different organisms. Spirulina is a cyanobacterium with a soft wall that does not need cracking, which is why you never see broken-cell spirulina. Chlorella is a true algae with the cellulose wall this whole article is about.
A blend containing both is not doubling up. A blend containing intact chlorella and calling it equivalent to the broken kind is overstating what it has.
What to check
- Does the label say broken-cell, cracked-cell or pulverised?
- Is the amount given, or pooled into a blend total?
- Will the brand tell you where the algae was grown?
- Is there a batch report covering heavy metals?
