Anxiety and nervousness: foods that help, foods to avoid, and supplements

What diet can and cannot do for anxiety and restlessness, foods to eat and avoid, the Ayurvedic herbs and supplements that have been studied, how to take supplements safely with anxiety medicine, and when to get help.

Part of Caffeine alternatives for focus. Related: Signal, a focus and clarity supplement.

Short answer: anxiety is a medical condition, and its treatment is therapy, sometimes medicine, sleep and exercise. Food cannot cure it, and no supplement may claim to. What diet can do is stop making it worse: less caffeine and alcohol, steady meals, and enough of the nutrients the brain uses. If anxiety is affecting your days, see a doctor.

Foods that may help when you feel anxious all the time

  • Regular meals with protein. Blood sugar dips feel like anxiety: shaky, sweaty, heart racing.
  • Fibre and fermented foods. Dal, vegetables, whole grains and curd feed gut bacteria; gut-brain research is early but active.
  • Omega-3 sources. Walnuts, flaxseed, algal or fish DHA.
  • Magnesium-rich foods. Pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, rajma.
  • Water. Dehydration raises heart rate.

Foods to avoid with anxiety

  • Too much caffeine. Coffee, strong chai and energy drinks can trigger palpitations and restlessness. Many people with anxiety feel better under 200 mg a day.
  • Alcohol. It calms for an hour, then rebounds into worse anxiety the next day.
  • Sugary snacks on an empty stomach.
  • Pre-workout and "fat burner" products loaded with stimulants.

Ayurvedic herbs for anxiety and restlessness: what the research says

Herb or nutrient Evidence
Ashwagandha Several trials show lower anxiety and stress scores over 8 weeks
Bacopa (brahmi) Lower anxiety scores in some 12-week memory trials
L-theanine Calm alertness and stress responses in small trials
Tulsi Small trials on stress and anxiety
Magnesium May help people with low intake; mixed overall

None of these treats an anxiety disorder.

Can I take supplements with anxiety medicine?

Ask your doctor first. Ashwagandha and tulsi may add to sedatives; L-theanine and bacopa may interact with some medicines; St John's wort interacts with many antidepressants. Never stop or replace prescribed medicine with a supplement.

When to get help

See a doctor if anxiety lasts most days for weeks, you avoid things because of it, you have panic attacks, or it affects sleep and work. Tele-MANAS, India's free mental health helpline, is on 14416. If you have thoughts of self-harm, call it now.
